Courses for 16-18 year olds

The full-time courses on this page are mainly for students aged 16-18. BTEC courses are designed as a more vocational pathway to higher education or employment, and the starting level depends on students' achieved grades.  We recommend you apply for the course that fits your predicted or achieved grades (entry requirements are listed on the course pages under the tab : WHAT QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?). Apply now to study next September - a tutor will make sure you are on the right course and level at your interview.

Barnet and Southgate College guarantees to place every student on a suitable course.  If you don’t meet the entry criteria for one course, we will find you another suitable study programme to help you progress and achieve your ambitions.

In order to help your career progression, most of our courses involve a considerable degree of work experience, which the College can assist you in finding. The exact amount of work experience required for each course will vary, but you can discuss this with tutors at your interview.

Courses for Adults

Part-time courses listed on this page are mainly for adult learners, and are designed to fit in with your commitments and schedules. Courses start at various times throughout the year, and we recommend you choose and apply for your part-time course as soon as possible and begin your journey with Barnet and Southgate College. We will ensure that you are put onto the perfect course for your aspirations and learning level.

THE INDUSTRY

Construction is big business in the UK. In 2012, construction was worth £83 billion to the economy. That is the same as thirty-three years’ worth of turnover at Arsenal Football Club or building the London Eye one hundred times. Over two million people work in construction in the UK, around 260,000 of them in London alone.

You could find yourself working for a wide range of people. Private housing or commercial property accounted for over half the new work coming in at the start of 2013 but a fifth is from the public sector, like the government or local councils. So you could also be building schools, social housing or even taking part in huge infrastructure projects like Crossrail.
