Hear from Boxing Academy Student

The BSC Bears Boxing Education Academy is for students over 16 years old, and combines full-time academic education with 8hours a week of high-quality boxing coaching throughout the academic year as part of the student’s study programme. In addition to the training, students have the opportunity to undertake Boxing vocational qualifications, mentoring in the sport and offers students a pathway into coaching and employment in the boxing industry.

The Academy is run in partnership with England Boxing and Get Set Go Sport, who have a proud reputation and pedigree in boxing. England Boxing coaches deliver the Boxing content, developing a bespoke and elite coaching environment. The programme is designed to compliment the work that young Boxers may be doing with their clubs and existing coaches and students are actively encouraged to remain with their existing clubs whilst on the programme or if not affiliated to a club already will be helped to find a suitable one.

The Coaching:


The coaches will deliver a variety of technical and physical content. All Boxers on the Academy will be licensed to Box and receive a Boxing medical through the programme if they do not already have this through their existing clubs or it has expired. Based on feedback with student’s club coaches, delivery will be split between;

The Academics:


Students on this pathway are able to select from a number of full-time academic qualifications to study ranging from BTEC Level 1, 2, 3 or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, A Level packages, NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership (Coaching), YMCA Personal Training and Gym Instruction Courses.

Barnet and Southgate College has a choice of up to 7 Academies including our Boxing Academy. Focus your mind on something challenging and positive alongside your studies.

The programme offers alongside full-time education:

  • ​​​​​8 hrs per week of training sessions a week within the student’s study programme (day time, Mon-Fri).
  • Up to six boxing-related industry vocational qualifications including the Level 1 and Level 2 Coach Award, Safeguarding and First Aid qualifications.
  • Applied work experience opportunities at York Hall events, Olympic qualifying events and England Boxing events
  • English and Maths (where relevant)
  • Employability skills
  • Physiotherapists who will deliver clinic sessions, and free access to the college’s performance gym with strength and conditioning support available for all Academy students.
  • Learners who enrol on the course will be required to sign a code of conduct, and will not be allowed to train or do additional qualifications unless they are up-to-date with their academic commitments
