THE SUBJECT

Engineering covers many different types of activity using their creativity to design solutions to the world’s problems such as develop new materials like high performance sports fabrics or new electronic displays. Topics covered on our courses included materials, mechanical and electrical principles, mathematics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), electronics, engineering science and fluid mechanics.

OUR CURRICULUM

We run Level 2 and 3 BTEC courses in Engineering, hard work on the BTEC pathway can get you into university just like A Level study. With solid student support and a dedicated career department we can help you achieve your ambition.

Courses for 16-18 year olds

The full-time courses on this page are mainly for students aged 16-18. BTEC courses are designed as a more vocational pathway to higher education or employment, and the starting level depends on students' achieved grades.  We recommend you apply for the course that fits your predicted or achieved grades (entry requirements are listed on the course pages under the tab : WHAT QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?). Apply now to study next September - a tutor will make sure you are on the right course and level at your interview.

Barnet and Southgate College guarantees to place every student on a suitable course.  If you don’t meet the entry criteria for one course, we will find you another suitable study programme to help you progress and achieve your ambitions.

In order to help your career progression, most of our courses involve a considerable degree of work experience, which the College can assist you in finding. The exact amount of work experience required for each course will vary, but you can discuss this with tutors at your interview.

Why study Engineering?

"I’m 18 years old and studying on the BTEC level 2 engineering course at the Southgate Campus of Barnet and Southgate College. A careers advisor recommended the College to me via the ‘back on track’ route, as I needed to take my GCSE maths at the same time.

"The course is very good and you learn lots of things within engineering, and the teachers are really good and experienced. Eventually I want to study civil engineering, so for me I’d go onto level 3, and then apply for engineering at university I want to stay in London to study.

"The highlight so far, and the best thing about coming to College is learning the application of the materials and how to create a product and design of something. My dream job would be to work as a civil engineer and design buildings. In Italy you have to choose a field to study at the age of 11, so I chose engineering while I was at school and straight away I liked it, I like the fact that you can work with an architect and build something great.

"I would recommend the College and my course it’s really good, I think more girls should go into engineering, it’s for everyone.”
