Why choose to study at a further education college over a sixth form?

Students in the UK typically have two main post-16 options for continuing their education

Students who have completed their GCSEs typically have two main options for continuing their education: they can either attend a sixth form within their school or go to a further education (FE) college. Both options offer a route to further qualifications; but there are a number of advantages to choosing a further education college over a sixth form.

Some (but not all) of the advantages are:

  1. FE colleges offer a much wider range of courses than sixth forms. This means that students have a greater choice when it comes to deciding what they want to study, and can often find courses that are not available at a sixth form. This can be especially important for students who have a specific career path in mind and need to study a particular subject to get there.
  2. Further education colleges tend to offer more flexibility in terms of study options. For example, they may offer evening classes, part-time courses or apprenticeships. This can be particularly helpful for students who are juggling other commitments, such as work or family responsibilities, or those who wish to work and train at the same time.
  3. At a further education college, students are treated more like adults - and are given greater independence than they would be in a sixth form. This can be an important step for students who are looking to develop their independence and prepare for the world of work or higher education.
  4. Further education colleges often offer greater levels of support for their students. This can include access to academic support services, career guidance, and pastoral care. For students who need extra support to succeed academically or emotionally, a further education college can be a great option.
  5. Further education colleges often have stronger links with local employers, which means that they are better placed to provide students with the skills and experience they need to succeed in the world of work. They may offer work placements, apprenticeships, or other opportunities to gain practical experience in their chosen field.

To sum up - while sixth forms are a good option for many students, there are numerous clear benefits to choosing to study at a further education college. From a wider range of courses and greater flexibility to greater independence, support, and preparation for the world of work, further education colleges can offer a more enriching educational experience.
