This course is ideal for individuals over 16 who have an interest in the human body and its relation to health and fitness. It is also suitable for those looking to progress onto the YMCA Level 3 Personal Training course or pursue a career in the health and fitness industry, with the aim of becoming a fitness instructor and Personal Trainer.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
To enrol in this course, you are required to have 4 GCSEs at grades 3-9, preferably including English, Maths, and P.E. You must have a genuine interest in Health and Fitness, with a view to gaining employment in the Fitness Industry. You will be able to choose one of the following academies on your application: Athletics, Basketball, Football, Tennis, Boxing, Flag Football, or Women’s Rugby. While it is ideal to have previous experience playing competitive sports, it is not necessary to secure a place on the course.
What will I study ?
In this course, you will study a range of subjects specific to the Health and Fitness industry, including: Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology for exercise and fitness professionals; Providing a positive customer experience to exercise and fitness participants; Health awareness and lifestyle management; Health screening, risk stratification and scope of practice; Principles of Physical Activity, exercise and training approaches to develop fitness and health; Supporting clients in a gym-based environment; and Planning, delivering, and evaluating gym-based training. Additionally, as part of your full-time study programme, you will have the chance to join one of our academies, participate in training and matches, and earn extra coaching qualifications. You can choose from the following academies: Athletics, Basketball, Football, Tennis, Boxing, Flag Football, Women’s Rugby, and male Volleyball.
How will I be assessed ?
Assessments will take place throughout the course including case studies; practical assessments, completion of learner assessment records (LARs); presentations and professional discussions.
What qualifications could I achieve ?
On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the L2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Exercise and Fitness: Gym Instructor (Diploma).
How do I join the course ?
Please complete an application form and return to the College – either online, by post or in person at one of our campuses. You will need to register for and attend a sports trial with your chosen specialist sports academy (trials and academies are detailed on our Sports webpages).
Will I need an interview ?
Yes, you will need to meet with a member of staff for an interview and complete an initial assessment.
