Construction students from Barnet and Southgate College took part in an extensive work experience programme last term, which involved going on several on-site visits
Students and staff took advantage of the prime location of the College's Colindale Campus to see at first hand much of the redevelopment that is taking place in their part of north-west London.
Established construction employers such as The Hill Group and St. George, who are both involved in local redevelopment, invited the students on site and asked them to take part in various training activities.
These activities included virtual presentations and discussions about job roles in the industry, as well as the hands-on site visits.
A student studying Level 1 Plumbing said:
"We enjoyed our St George site visit, especially since it was nice to see fully furnished apartments in the sales suite. It was a good experience to see what the end product specifications are going to be and how high the craftsmanship expectations are. We would like to do our work experience with St George Construction Company in the future".
A student studying Level 1 Carpentry said:
“We liked that we had the virtual presentations before our visit to the St Georges building site. The second presentation made it more real, listening to what the industry professionals had to say about the industry. Especially hearing what different roles and career paths are available in the construction industry and how it’s easy to progress. One of the speakers mentioned that he was a scaffolder and now he is a manager, this was very inspirational".
Curriculum Manager for Construction, Mirjana Stanojevic Cutting, said:
"We're extremely grateful to all the construction companies who put in their precious time and effort to involve our students. Real-world construction experience is invaluable, and can only benefit the students in their preparation for careers in the field."
