If you are focused on a career working with children and want to achieve a qualification which will enable you to progress on to university to train to be a primary school teacher, therapist, or other specialist in the early years sector then this is the qualification for you. This two-year qualification at Barnet and Southgate College is also designed to prepare you for employment as a qualified Early Years Educator in the childcare sector upon completion. This qualification will prepare you to work with children aged 0-5 years through practical work experience in a nursery and primary school setting for part of the week and to gain knowledge and understanding of working with children up to 7 years of age by completing activities in the classroom and submitting a range of assignments and a portfolio.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
You must have a genuine interest in a career working with children. You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4/5 (C) or above, including a GCSE grade 4/5 (C) or above in English Language and Mathematics. A Functional Skill Level 2 in English and Mathematics is also accepted. Evidence of work experience with children is desirable.
What will I study ?
The technical qualification is split into 2 component parts: Core component: the knowledge and underpinning concepts, theories and principles as well as core skills for the education and early years sector. Occupational specialisms: Even though this qualification has three different occupational specialisms, Early Years Educator; Assisting Teaching; Supporting and Mentoring Students in Educational Settings, we are currently only offering the Early Years specialism. The occupational specialism provides students with knowledge and skills required to enter employment or further study in the specific occupational area. Core component: paper A written examination; paper B written examination; employer-set project
How will I be assessed ?
This two-year course is assessed and completed through a range of assignments (some externally marked), a portfolio and vocational industry work placement in a nursery where you will be observed in practice formally as part of this course, once in your first year and three times in your second year. You will complete various synoptic external assessments which are timed under exam conditions over the two years as well as written exams. As part of this course, you are required to complete a DBS check. You can expect to spend three days in college and two days in your industry work placement.
