This is a course for anyone aged 19+ who is interested in developing fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts. You may be doing this for your own development, as a workplace requirement, or for further study. You will already have a level of maths that means you will be able to approach problems involving algebra, ratio, geometry and statistics with some confidence. What qualifications or experience do I need?
None, but you will need to attend an initial assessment session and have a short interview.
What will I study ?
You will acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems using a calculator and by carrying out your own calculations. You will reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions. Finally, you will comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context. You will study using traditional classroom activities and via online tools such as BKSB. You will be supported in using digital technologies. As well as attending all classes, you should be able to study independently for 5 hours per week.
How will I be assessed ?
Your teacher will assess your classwork and homework to inform areas you need to work on. There will be three exams in the summer which will assess your skills.

GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics
How do I join the course ?
You can apply online and then be invited to an interview and enrolment session. The college will hold open enrolment sessions from the end of August before classes start. However, classes do fill up so it is better to apply earlier to secure your place. At interview we will find the best class for you. Once you are enrolled on a course you will be able to use your student ID to access the college and your classes. You will be able to use facilities on all campuses including the library, gym, careers advice, counselling and extra support.
Will I need an interview ?
Yes – you will meet the Foundation Learning team and take an assessment to determine what level class you will take.
Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?
You will need to purchase copies of the set course texts (these will be announced when you start the course) and provide basic stationery such as A4 lined notepads, pens etc. You will also need to provide a scientific calculator and geometry set including compass, protractor, ruler and set square. The end of year Exam fee is an ADDITIONAL COST unless included in the course fees. Please note: GCSE Maths is FREE to applicants who DO NOT have a grade C (4/5) or above. However for those who DO have a grade C (4/5) or above and wish to IMPROVE their grade, there will be a charge.
